We purchased the land and house in August
2003. Since it was in such disrepair, we contracted to have it
completely gutted and redone. I'm sure you will agree that it has
under gone a massive transformation. We have people stop by, just
to tell us what a wonderful job we have done with the place.
We have become regular farmers too. Our place is zoned as
a farm and therefore needs to follow the soil conservation recommendations
that the state of Maryland requires. I agree with the idea of protecting
the land, so I'm not upset that we have to do certain things to help the
soil. In 2004, we had three tons of lime [yes you read that right] spread
and some outrages amount of fertilizer spread. The amounts are determined
by the soil samples we had to submit. Of course this land was lacking everything,
so the initial amounts are real high. In 2005 it droped to something
like one ton of lime and a small amount of fertilizer. The Land Management
office tells you what to put on the land and when. We seed the fields every February/March. Now our fields are lush and support the horses from spring into early fall.
I hope you enjoy our remodel photos on the left.
